This piece deals with instability and fragility in sound, and the extremities of certain timbres, especially within the bass flute (which is the solo instrument here). This instability was key to the way the work came together as an ensemble piece. We, as agents in the musical community, are used to the design of an instrument being as stable as possible, so it becomes a challenge to find the instabilities in one’s own instrument and learn how to govern them. When combined within an ensemble, they enable new voices to be heard, and begin to resonate with each other. They become apparitions with no identifiable source; they are in-between sounds, in between the players. The soundworld of the piece is a celebration of this. Additionally, each instrumental timbral palette is reduced, so these extremes (in dynamic/articulation/timbre, etc.) take on maximum importance whether it be distorted choleric sounds, or soft, warm and expressive sounds. This composition has become a juxtaposition of this extreme, fragile and fragmented material. - Elis Czerniak
